Science is a Drag

June 26, 2019 | 8:00 am - 5:00 pm EDT

Sometimes science really is a drag, so let’s put some rhinestones on it and MAKE IT A PARTY!!

The first of its kind, #ScienceIsADrag is a free event where Scientists will be challenging the cis/heteronormative stereotypes of science with entertaining drag performances and interactive science presentations! Come for dinner, drinks & drag – stay for the science!!

If you wanna grab the best seats, we’ll have science demos and queer science art for sale starting at 6pm. Show starts at 7pm, and includes prizes plus lots of time for questions. Our host & headliner is the legendary @Champagna Drag, BENT Beauty Supreme 2019!

Many of our performers are seasoned science communicators but will be in drag for the first time! To cheer them on (and because it’s fun!), we encourage all attendees to dress up for the occasion – there may just be a prize for the most spirited audience member!

Please RSVP via Eventbrite! The event is completely free, but drag show etiquette is to bring tips for our incredible headliner & bar staff.

This inaugural event is being Co-Produced by Science.Sam, Herc’d on Science, Geith Maal-Bared, and Royal Canadian Institute for Science. We’re stoked to be partnering with The Gladstone Hotel as our venue sponsor.

Full performer list coming soon, but there are still a few spots open if you want to take centre stage with some science and spins! We strongly encourage 2SLGBTQIA+ and BIPoC Scientists & Communicators to apply, and will proudly support you in bringing your dream presentation to life as best we can! Apply here by Monday June 17th.

This is a 2SLGBTQIA+ friendly event, and we are committed to doing everything we can to make sure everyone is comfortable and respected throughout the event.

The Melody Bar in the historic Gladstone Hotel is accessible via a concrete ramp that takes you to the 36 inch front entrance. There is no automatic door opener, but there is a small doorbell that guests can ring to be let inside by the concierge. The accessible washroom is located on the main floor and has the following highlights – 35 inch wide door, two grab bars, 29 inch high sink, an automatic soap dispenser, and a collapsible change table. There is no automatic door opener. Google Slides will be used to auto-caption the event live, and please do not hesitate to let us know if there are any other accommodations we can arrange to make the event enjoyable and comfortable for you!
