Crossing Cultures Dialogue Series: Toronto Edition #2

July 4, 2019 | 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm EDT

Sparking dialogue in youth of colour about the unique familial, cultural and other unique stressors and how it effects our well-being.

About this Event

Crossing Cultures Dialogue Series aims to bring together a community of young people of colour to discuss their experiences with mental health/well-being, culture, and family. Through facilitated dialogue, we will explore and understand the effects of differing cultural values, various family dynamics, and pressures of the “model minority” stereotype on mental well-being. Join us for an evening of dialogue as we navigate the intersections of culture/identity and mental health.

This event is being held in collaboration with the Creative Arts Mental Health Program, an organization working to instill creative and artistic skills in children as a coping mechanism and outlet of expression.

Date: July 4th, 2019

Location: Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, Room 4414 – 252 Bloor St W, Toronto, ON M5S 1V6

What is GenAi and who are we?

GenAi is a project put on by a group of Simon Fraser University students/recent alumni who hopes to enable people of colour, their families, and associated community members to gather together to engage in conversations about mental health and well-being as people of colour. We are interested in exploring the intersections of culture and family that has shaped the struggles, stressors, and lived experiences of mental well-being in this demographic. GenAi would also like to create a community of young people who can connect on these issues to develop our individual understanding as racialized young people and our society’s understanding to prompt systemic change.

By creating this community, we hope to bring people together to share their own thoughts, experiences, and ideas so that we can grow, learn, and support one another.
